Basic Life Support (BLS)
BLS is divided into two broad categories: BLS for Healthcare Providers (HCP) and various Heart Saver courses.
Heart Saver (First Aid) (CPR AED) (Pediatric CPR): Heart Saver courses are oriented toward training lay workers in emergency situations that they may come across on a day-to-day basis. The various courses offer training in the basics of first aid, adult CPR with AED use, and child and infant CPR. Courses can be merged in several ways or taken separately.
BLS HCP: This course focuses on what healthcare providers need to know to perform CPR in a wide variety of in- and out-of-hospital settings. Skills learned include:
- Initiating the chain of survival
- Performing prompt, high-quality chest compressions for adult, child, and infant victims
- Initiating early use of an AED
- Providing appropriate rescue breaths
- Practicing 2-rescuer team CPR
- Relieving choking
